横浜商科大 開学50周年記念館Yokohama College of Commerce 50th Anniversary Building
開学50周年記念館は、横浜の起伏の激しい敷地に建設された。外観は方位によってデザインや仕上げが異なるが、エントランス側のファサードには外階段を囲むようにエキスパンドメタルの透明性が活かされている。サインは、それを素材に選択し、内外の文脈をつなげる目的で用いた。立体的なエキスパンドメタルは切り抜くことが非常にむずかしく、サインの材料としては適切とはいえないが、ここではあえてそうした素材の扱いにくさや意外性をデザインのポイントとした。ありそうでないサインの表現になったと思う。
This building is located at the rolling site and has different design and materials of each elevation. Especially, expanded metal materials is used for the main façade while utilizing its character of transparency.
We also use this material for sign design to make a continuity of inside and outside of the building. It is difficult to say that expanded metal material is good for general signage design due to its difficulty of cutting. But, those difficulties and unexpectedness produce very unlikely expression of sign design.
